The Structure and Semantics of the Derivational Base of English Adjectives Proper (on the Materials of “The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology”, C.T. Onions, 1966)

The structure and semantics of the derivational base of English adjectives are considered. It is shown that adjectives in the English language are formed from stems of various parts of speech and stems of word groups as well. The research has shown that the greatest number of English adjectives is built on noun stems, abstract in semantics.
