Church Splits 1920s: Politics of the Schismatics and Opposition Clirics (for Example, the Community of St. Paul of Taganrog)

(Taganrog County parishes of Rostov-on-Don Eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate)

The article is devoted to the analysis of the features of the opposition of the Renovationists and Tikhon’s followers in Taganrog. The study of archival sources and, in particular, the criminal investigative case, called the "Case of saints", shows that the active phase of the confrontation of the renovationists, led by the “Bishop” Alexander Shubin, and two monastic communities of Bishop Joseph (Chernov) and holy righteous Paul of Taganrog began in 1925. The initiative to destroy the memory of the revered by people elderly monk Paul and his community was made by “Bishop” Alexander, who initiated the criminal prosecution of the community.
For these purposes, he, in addition to administrative resources, attracted the media (The “Red banner” newspaper), on the pages of which for more than 2 years articles discrediting the honor and dignity of both the revered elder and his followers were published.
To combat the memory of the elderly monk “Bishop” Alexander used the method of falsi-fication, offering to deify the less known and forgotten by the time Daniel in-stead of the elder Paul. Despite the destruction of the community of the elder Paul, the chapel built over his grave and the grave itself, the renovated Tagan-rog diocese ceased to exist even before the end of the investigation, and the memory of the elder, kept by his followers, has remained alive until today.
