Historical Essay of His Imperial Majesty's Own Convoy as an Object of Study of the Historical Culture of the Kuban and Terek Cossacks

The article examines the phenomenon of the historical culture of the Cossacks based on the analysis of the historical essay of His Imperial Majesty’s Own convoy, compiled by his adjutant S. Petin and published in 1888 and 1911. During the study, historical-genetic, biographical and semiotic methods were used, as well as systemic an approach.
The novelty of the work is determined both by the topic of research and the source base represented by archival materials of the State Archive of the Krasnodar Territory. The article discusses the main life milestones of S. Petin, which are directly related to the research issues. Particular attention is paid to the historical context in which the historical essay was created. It is shown that defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 years and revolutionary unrest of 1905–1907 years contributed to the actualization of the study of Russia's military past and the popularization of the exploits of Russian soldiers. The main target audience and distribution channels for the work on the history of the Convoy are considered. The article highlights the main elements in the structure of historical culture, refl ected in the military-historical work of S. Petin: documentary information about the military path of the Convoy from 1811 to 1911 years, ideas of the mass consciousness of the Cossacks who were in it, the subjective and personal views of the author.
