The Plurality and Variability of Approaches to the Study of Tropes in English-Language Hip-Hop Discourse

The article examines diff erent approaches to studying tropes in text and discourse. Ecological approach introduced by G.G. Hazagerov has been chosen as providing optimal means for objective analysis as it combines means of cognitive and rhetorical approaches. Examples of metaphor, metonymy and irony in English language hip-hop lyrics have been analysed. It has been determined that lifespan and conventionality are two of the most important qualities of a trope in discourse.
