(Federal Research Center Southern Scientifi c Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Rostov-on-Don, Russia)

The article reveals features of the wedding ritual of the Don Cossacks of the Semikarakorsky District of the Rostov Region, based on expeditions conducted between the 1970s and 2020s. The author estimates the dynamics of the Semikarakorsky wedding tradition and its place within the context of various
regional types of Don Cossack rites.
It is concluded that the wedding of the Cossacks of the Semikarakorsky District belongs to the Lower Don type of rite, but shares a number of features with the rituals of neighboring territories that are not found anywhere else in the Don region. Despite the significant reduction of the rite during Soviet times, many
significant episodes and wedding songs are preserved in the memory of the district’s elders today.
