The mission and functions of universities in the development of innovation economy have been defined and analyzed. The importance of fundamentalization in engineering education as well as integration humanitarian, natural science and professional knowledge in training specialists of the 21st century has been well founded. The relationship of education system and main subsystems of the environment have been analyzed.
