Between Christianity and Islam: Confessional Factor in Russian Administrative Policies in the 19th century North Caucasus (Balkar Rural Societies).
The article represents an attempt to ascertain the role of religion in the Russian governmental policies aimed at integration of North Caucasus mountaineers into the imperial administrative system. The case of the Balkar rural societies seems to be exemplar for the problem as a whole. Based on the source analysis conclusion is made that through the 19th century the relative meaning and functions ascribed to religion were dependent on the adequacy of the views Russian administration held about socio-cultural characteristics of local ethnic communities. Confessional factor should be considered not as substantive but rather supportive element in general governmental policy in North Caucasus.
