The article is devoted to the analysis of the basic historical and social aspects of development of extreme tourism in Russia. The concept of extreme tourism is specitied. Principal causes of the increased interest to employment by extreme tourism in a modern Russian society are considered. Preconditions for development of active kinds of tourism on Northern Caucasus and in region the Caucasian Mineral Waters are investigated.
