Forgotten Molecule of Vitamin G
The article is dedicated to the history of allantoin (Vitamin G, (Guskov)) discovery. The theory of protector catabolism as a response to oxidative stress, suggested by E. P. Guskov, is discussed. A variety of catabolites, including DNA degradation intermediates, was studied in order to prove this theory. These studies brought the researchers to the so called “forgotten molecule” known as allantoin. Study of its biological activity showed that it is involved in protector mechanisms similar to that of exogenous vitamins.
