Structural Characteristic of the Word-Building Base of the English Verbs (Based on the Analysis of Concise Oxford English Dictionary 11th Edition, Revised, 2006)

The article deals with the problem of differentiation of the notions “word-building stem” and “derived stem” and with the structural characteristic of word-building stems of different parts of speech, on the basis of which English verbs were coined. The author draws the conclusion that a word-building stem can be root, derived, compound or compound-derived.
