Protest as a Type of Social Action: the Elements of a Theoretical and Methodological Construct

This article discusses the features of the different theoretical approaches to the study of protest as a type of social behavior and social activity. The author dwells on the concept of relative deprivation by T. Gurr, analyzes its potential in the context of explaining the social and psychological causes of protest activity, compares it with the concepts of cognitive dissonance and anomie. The author considers the need for additions to the theoretical model of mobilization of protest activity, proposed by T. Gurr on modern society, gives the own definition of a protest as a type of social action, too.
