The Modern Theories of the Development of Urbanism

Purpose: The purpose of this article is analysis of modern western urbanism theories to defi ne their possibilities
in development of Russian cities in practice.
Methods: We realize comparative and interdisciplinary method s using recourses from different areas such as
sociology, urbanism, philosophy, cultural history etc.
Results: It is describe in detail the emergence of modern urbanism. The Author introduces the concept of
“postindustrial urbanism”. It is shown in short Janis Jacobs’s theory. We come to conclusion that urban principle is a
base of postindustrial urbanism. The article is concerned with the most modern theory of urbanism, for example, Florida
R., Lloyd R., Gale J., Gemzo L., Landry Ch. ect. The author distinguishes European and American patterns of urbanism
theory. There is summarized experience of western urbanism. The article describes prospects of western application in
Russian cities. The most popular pattern is gentrifi cation.
Discussion: The article is of great help in development of urbanism in russian cities. This is of interest to Russian
developers, scientists, politics and inhabitants for foundation of active civil position.
