In Regard to the Question on the Signs of the Chechen Tеip
The paper interprets qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the Chechen Teips (clans) basing on the analysis of historical and ethnographical data in Soviet historical literature.
The article shows that the Chechen teip researchers A.G. Avtorkhanov, M.A. Mamakaev and others had to slant their works in favor of offi cial, “standard” and “classical” clan, which didn’t refl ect the whole nature of the term. Thus making it correspond to all the signs of tribal institutes.
The author considers that it was a mistake of the Soviet teip researches to make a comparison of outer formal signs of the Chechen teip and ethnographic clan of Iroquoises, described by L. Morgan.
Absolutization of this misinterpretation triggered underestimation of economic and social development of involved ethnicities, which were on different levels.
The article presents the author’s view of the problem in historical background taking into account ethnic processes which took place in the Chechen society.
The author concludes that Chechen teip is not a classic clan according to it social context, but brotherhood. Consequently it couldn’t obtain signs of “morganistic” clan as it was used to consider in the soviet historical science.
