(Rostov-on-Don)

The article is dedicated to understanding of the place the university occupies in the system of social institutions – the culture of disciplinarity, science, scientific and technological revolution and academic policy. There are five steps in the progress of thought, representing the university in a system of social institutions in the framework of the European cultural tradition. These include the following: (a) The “spiritual” (church) standing of perceptive intelligence in the system of broadcasting and transmutation of supranational Christian culture of Western Europe; b) the usage of the disciplinarity through confirmation of ancient “pagan wisdom” of the Greeks; c) the unexpected continuation of natural theology in the form of a fact that will be subsequently referred to as “science”, although the actual inclusion of natural sciences into the universities went on seriously only after the reforms of Humboldt; d) the inclusion of the very academic (university) part into the processes of providing of the personnel succession on almost all the tracks in the conditions of scientific and technical revolution of the 20th century; e) the growing need of transformation of the academic sector in terms of its optimization.
