Releasing of a huge amount of scholarly and journalistic studies on historical subjects gives a good reason to call the current stage of development of scienceas “Golden age of Caucasiology”. The latter to our opinion is a scientific literature that analyzes the process of history studying of peoples of the Caucasus, and in this sense the Caucasiology is the history of historical thought, concepts, and science.
The publication of collections of documents and handbooks is a positive phenomenon in science, indicating the expansion of the source base of researches on actual problems of history of the North Caucasus peoples. But in some collections of documents the authors, forgetting the basics of archeology, oftenplace archival documents without thematical links, titles, keyword, comments etc. Of course, this “roughness” of the published documents can be called “teething
problems”, but there are so many of the problems that they look rather like the rule than an unfortunate exception.
To avoid these archeological errors, it requires persistent theoretical and practical work of researchers of the North Caucasus. As an example, we consider the writings ofthe senior scientist of the North Ossetia Institute of Humanitarian and Social Studies D. Sc. in History E.I. Kobakhidze who has published two collections of documents on administrative policy of the Russiangovernment among the peoples of the Central Caucasus. They refl ect the achievements and weaknesses of contemporary sources. Analysis of collections of documents shows that both science and researchers got a serious source to recharge the principal problem of the peoples of the North Caucasus and reconstruct the regional policy of the government.
