Theoretical and Methodological Aspects of Investigation of Social Component in the Problem of Industrial Modernization

The article dwells upon key theoretical and methodological aspects of the studies of subjective perception of modernization-driven social changes by the population.
The conclusion was made about applicability of sociological notions “social mood” and “social well-being” to studying the issue. Therefore, the article analyzes key approaches to understanding the essence of social mood and social well-being phenomena and suggests their defi nitions.
Social mood is defi ned as dominating phenomenon of individual, group or public consciousness. It includes emotional and cognitive components and is the result of perception, interpretation and assessment of social environment by various subjects based on their inherent beliefs and values, plans and interests. Social well-being refers to subjective and personal component of social mood.
Issues of social moods and social well-being of the population were discussed in the article in the context of historical research. The conclusion was made that most important in such research of social mood and social well-being is to single out a block of historical sources containing information about those social subjects’ perception and judgements of the emerging new social environment and their place in it. It was suggested to use sources of personal origin for it, i.e. letters, complaints, statements, interviews, claims made during strikes and job actions.
The conclusion was drawn that in the context of research of particular historical period of Southern Russia modernization process at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century the application of the notions of social moods and social well-being will make it possible to create such its theoretical model that will refl ect both its social-economic and social-cultural components, will help to detail more thoroughly the reasons for such extensive civil protests amount workers of the Southern Russia during the Revolution period in 1905–1907 and further slow-down of the protests.
It is obvious that at the present stage of the national historical sciences development this chapter of Russian modernization of the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century again becomes central and requires detailed studying
