Personality’s Identity Crisis in Postmodern Culture
The article is dedicated to the study of socio-cultural determinants of personality’s identity crisis in postmodern culture. The paradox of the situation in the modern world is that, despite the fact that the postmodern man experiences much more interest to cognition of his own inner world than the external one; however, he is not able to make the complete picture of his personality as of a sustainable integrity, coessential to itself. Although in modern Russian and foreign philosophical literature the study of identity problems is given a lot of attention, the solution to an issue of personality’s identity crisis features in postmodern culture is yet little investigated. Analysis of the current issue makes it necessary to apply the methodology of systematic analysis, which allows considering the personality’s identity characteristics correlation in the postmodern culture with the basic principles of the given culture. The carried out analysis makes it possible to conclude that the personality’s identity crisis in the given culture is inevitable, since it is predetermined not by individual peculiarities of separate people, but by such basic features of postmodern culture as ideological uncertainty, individualism, ethical relativism, decentrality. Thus, the ideological uncertainty, which combines
the variety of world views in the mind of one person, makes his identifi cation with any one of them impossible. At the same time, extreme individualism, that generates ethical relativism, leads to the fact that the individual cannot form
for himself a clear understanding of moral values, thus excluding the formation of adequate and sustainable picture of evaluation criteria of his own identity. Decentrality of postmodern culture begets the decentrality of personality, that
results in absence of its integrity and sameness, and it makes self-identify impossible, since personality’s identity implies its integrity and subjectivity, which are of no possession to such personality.
