The Influence of Modern European Languages on the Formation of the Lexical Layer of English Academic Discourse

Methods: We examine the infl uence of other languages on the lexis, representing the English academic discourse, using the method of component analysis, the etymological method and the method of comparative analysis.
Results: The English academic discourse includes quite a lot of words of Latin and Greek origin. They entered the English language either directly or indirectly, for example through French. As a matter-of-fact Latin and Greek components are still used to create new terminology within the academic discourse. Some European languages like French, German, Italian and others have also influenced the development of the discourse. The characteristic feature of the language of academic communication is that it is constituted by general education university lexis, specialized terminology and general scientifi c terminology.
Discussion: In its modern state the English academic discourse includes quite a lot of international words which are represented by scientific and technical terminology. As for the borrowings, they can be divided into several lexical groups, like names of higher education institutions, names of the teaching staff and student body and so on.
