Franglais: Yesterday and Today

The article gives characteristics of interlingual form of “franglais” and describes its basic modern types. Factors that led to qualitative changes of the status and functioning of “franglais” in social and cultural fi eld are also analyzed
in the article.
The reasons of forming of the borrowing tendency are described in short as well as the reasons of strengthening its position. The infl uence of English and American world, the great interest towards American consumer society, geographical and intratextual reasons are among them. The article also gives chronological framework of entering anglicisms in to the French language, 3 main groups are noted. The important mention is made about the key men who created and promoted the term “Franglais”, and also popular anglicist who divided modern franglais into 4 types 50 years later. The signifi cant part of the article gives the factors that led to qualitative changes of the status and functioning of “franglais” in social and cultural fi eld. Being wide-spread in France the phenomenon “franglais” covers several generations and nowadays we can speak about the possibility to interpret “franglais” in a variety of ways.
