The impact of geopolitical processes in the Sea of Azov – Black Sea and the Caspian Sea regions on the ethnopolitical situation in the South of Russia is analyzed in article. It is shown that the geopolitical factor came to a leading
position in the determination of ethno-political and religious processes. Geopolitical risks in the South are concentrated in two areas: in the south-east (the Turkish direction, the Armenian-Azerbaijani confl ict, the war in Syria, and others.), and in the south-west (the USA and NATO activity in the Black Sea region and in Eastern Europe, the confl ict in Ukraine, provocations in Crimea). The conclusion is that ethno-political and religious processes can no longer be regarded as
internal affairs in the context of contemporary geopolitical transformations. External forces play effectively on internal problems and contradictions, aggravating them to their advantage. The complex ethno-confessional structure and unresolved problems in inter-ethnic and inter-confessional relations in the North Caucasus make the region vulnerable to geopolitical risks. The increasing the role of the information component of modern extremism and terrorism is shown. It
is concluded that the main objective of information terrorism is to infl uence political processes on the scale of countries and regions by means of infl uencing identities, social consciousness and social feelings.
