“Otechestvenniye zapiski” takes a special place among the many pre-revolutionary Russian journals. It left a deep trace in the democratic periodicals with their attention to the burning problems of the Caucasus. During the years of
vigorous publicistic activity (1818–1884), the edition published hundreds of articles, essays, memoirs about the life of the mountaineers. The publication of accurate and truthful materials about the Caucasus meets the interests of not only
Russian government, but also broad Russian society.
The journal texts 1818–1867 evidenced that the publication of materials about Caucasian people was conducted in four main areas.
The first line was related to the publication of the articles about the Caucasian War and messages of Russian offi cers and offi cials about the mountaineers.
The second – filled with information of Russian and foreign travelers in the Caucasus. The third – engaged the scientifi c articles that covered the climatic features of the Caucasus region, its flora and fauna, the physical and chemical properties of the Caucasian Mineral Waters and others.
The fourth – published the reviewing notes of the critical and bibliographical department and literary and artistic works about the ethnic culture and the nature of the Caucasus.
