Social Adaptation of the Population of Kalmykia in the First Half of the 21st Century

The article based on the analysis of data of sociological surveys conducted over several years by the Center for ethno-social studies, Kalmyk Institute for humanitarian studies and an extensive literature discusses the features of
adaptation of the population of Kalmykia to radical changes of the post-Soviet period. Focuses on the study of specific problems of socio-economic adaptation, which are viewed through the prism of social well-being, highlights the prevailing
trends, methods adaptations in terms of total change. Adaptation of the population of the Republic to the conditions of transforming society is interpreted as the unity of the multifaceted and multilevel processes of adaptation of individuals and social groups.
The analysis of sociological data leads to the conclusion that, most of the region’s residents a hard time adapting to a changing environment, experiencing frustration, a dissatisfaction with many aspects of life, uncertainty about
the future. In the process of adaptation to market reforms, the population faced unemployment and manifestations of professional unclaimed. The change in the socio-economic situation in Kalmykia led to a growing trend of migration
potential, especially among young people. The main factors here were lack of permanent jobs, low standard of living.
Among the most fi nancially disadvantaged category of the population – pensioners. As a result of reforms there is a new social group, new entity relationships. At the same time marked a sharp polarization of the population by income, a signifi cant portion of the population is below the poverty line. The development of adaptation processes has been hampered by poor socio-economic condition of the country.
