Features of Studying the Problems of the Foreign Policy of the Bolsheviks in the History of the Greater Caucasus at the Beginning of the 21st Century

The main issue of the paper is special aspects of research approach to study of Great Caucasus in the Soviet foreign policy context. In the contemporary historiography, this problem is actual because region need to explore in the
unity of its various parts. The necessity to study of foreign policy aspect of the Caucasian history of 1917 is based on the existence of frozen conflicts, which are related with this historical period. Using examples from historiography of
different countries the author shows possible directions of studies Caucasian history in relation Bolsheviks foreign policy.
On the basis of analyzed historiographical sources it is possible to say about the need to form a comprehensive view on Greater Caucasus from the viewpoint of Russia’s foreign policy. Traditionally region considered region in unity by the
center of Russian, regardless of its ethnic and religious diversity. The existence of the Caucasus Viceroyalty as specific political institute, that was controlling the North and the South Caucasus proves this point of view. After 1917 the region
became again the scene of interest confl ict of the major actors in world politics. With the young Soviet state strengthening from the inside, the question of the return of the Great Caucasus within the Russian borders became the more urgent.
Analysis of literature complex led to the conclusion of fragmentation of historical knowledge about the issue. The need for a comprehensive study of the Greater Caucasus in the context of Russian foreign affairs during 1917–1922 уears.
