Policy in a Mirror of Political Philosophy: Ancient Experience and Modern Ideas

(Institute of Management in Economic, Ecological and Social Systems at the Southern Federal University)

The article deals with the role of political philosophy in modern social science and its relationship with policy. The scientific discussion on this subject has been begun in works of Arendt, Foucault, Lyotard, Bobbio. Philosophers still actively conduct this discussion. It shows the reviving interest in political philosophy. The author considers the reasons of this interest and draws a conclusion about movement of political philosophy from the periphery to the center of a philosophical discourse.
However, the reflection concerning the philosophy relation to policy was characteristic of the Ancient thinkers – Zenon, Cicero, and Seneca. The Ancient thinkers considered philosophy as a basis of socio-political activity, and the philosopher as active participant of political life. Leaning on a method of the comparative analysis of texts of the Ancient thinkers, the author proves that
transition from contemplate life to active life has already begun in ancient philosophy. It is possible to find some sources of belief in practical socio-political value of philosophy in the Ancient philosophical thinking. Having passed a long way of development, this belief will find the expression in the works of 20th century thinkers. They considered the philosopher not only as researcher, but also
as active participant of political life. This position continues to keep the relevance today.
