Toponymic Transformation of Identity and Memory in KBR: Nalchik

(St.-Petersburg State University)

Drawing on the perspective of toponymic redistribution of identity and memory, the paper builds on previous research on the transformation of urban spaces in the North Caucasus. Using the example of KBR and Nalchik city, the author illustrates the specifics, mechanism and key trends of the processes of deconstruction, conservation and construction of symbolic space. Drawing on the concepts of symbolic dominance, memory spaces, space making and cultural memory making, the author examines the process of symbolic exchange and uncovers its consequences for identity and memory. The paper proves that symbolic redistribution of urbanonyms in Nalchik has a local, ethno-cultural and family clan bias.
