The Impact of English on the Functioning of the Indigenous Languages of Nigeria

The article describes the theoretical aspects of the historical and cultural influence of the English language on the functioning of the indigenous languages of Nigeria. The author examines the main reasons for the dominance of the English language and its use in all spheres of life in Nigeria, analyzes the peculiarities of the language policy of Nigeria and outlines the prospects for its development.
