The article deals with the peculiarities of the language situation in modern Nigeria. The author examines the main problems of the language policy of Nigeria and outlines the prospects of language development. The study focuses on the problem of the extinction of the indigenous languages of Nigeria, due to the undeniable dominance of the English language in all spheres of life in Nigeria in the era of globalization.
