Problems of the Formation of the Working Class in Kabardino-Balkaria at the End of 20th – the Beginning of the 30th of the 20th Century
The article investigates the issue of attempts to sharply change the class and national composition of the population of the newly created Kabardino-BalkarAutonomous Region in order to create a public base of the new Soviet government on the example of the construction of the Baksan hydroelectric power station (1930–1936).
At this time, the policy of accelerated industrialization on the former deaf national outskirts of the state came across a conservative, centuries-old tradition of organizing social relations, the established labor culture associated with the annual agricultural cycle, national and religious features. The article explores some features of the conflict between the old and the new.
The author`s comes to the conclusion that this process was not finally completed and half a century after the events described, which led to a quick deindustrialization of the region and the growth of national movements after USSR destruction in 1991.
