The Bureau of Proletarian Students: the History of Student Union Movement in Stavropol Region in the 1920s
The article features the history of student union movement in Stavropol region in the 1920s in context of the history of trade union movement in the country. The authors analyze the origins, development and functioning of the Bureau of Proletarian Students as a branch of Stavropol regional Council of trade unions. The research is based on primary sources from State Archive of Contemporary History of Stavropol region; fund “The Bureau of Proletarian Students” (R-591). The Bureau of Proletarian Students united students of vocational training institutions who belonged to trade unions. The Bureau was involved in cultural and educational
activities; it organized union sections among students, published student press, recruited prospective students for vocational training institutions, supervised the process of admission to vocational training institutions and exerted control over vocational training institutions. The conclusion is made that the Bureau of Proletarian Students played an important role in the formation of student
self-government.
