The Problem of Interaction between Christian Confessions and the State in the Modern World: Comparative Analysis

(Rostov State University of Economic)

The article presents a comparative analysis of the interaction of Christian confessions and the state in the modern world.
The given approach allows to identify both positive and negative aspects of the influence of Eastern and Western Christianity on political processes in the 20th–21st centuries.
The analysis showed the positive impact of the influence of Orthodoxy on the state, which manifests the tendency of strengthening patriotism and preserving national identity. At the same time, the negative impact of the Orthodox ideology is that it
forms an uncritical attitude to the authorities/government and hinders the development of democratic processes in modern Russia.
Western Christianity, on the contrary, calls for criticism of the government and the development of civil society. However, the postulation of priority of democratic values by Catholicism and Protestantism to a large extent remains just a declaration, because the Churches in modern Western culture have become a subject to the values of consumer society, which creates only the illusion of freedom, and in fact makes a person dependent on the cult of hedonism in all its manifestations.
