Actualization of the Myth about Erisichton in Various Social and Сultural Сontexts: Callimachus, Ovid, Zhdanov
The article considers the possibility of mainstreaming the myth in modern culture and the impact of the socio-cultural context on its understanding. The author argues that mythology has not lost its importance as a source of moral generalizations.
The myth can even today encourage moral actions or deter immoral actions. This makes it possible to mainstream specific ancient myths in new social and cultural conditions. It is interesting to analyse the possibility of new interpretations of the myth about Erisichton. The author identifies the meaning and differences in interpretations of this myth belonging to Callimachus and Ovid.
She uses hermeneutic, cultural-historical, comparative methods in the analysis of the content of poetry works of Callimachus and Ovid. Comparison of poetry texts shows that they differ significantly. This is due to the difference between the socio-cultural conditions in which Callimahus and Ovid were located. In Callimach's version, Erisichton's criminal fault is a disregard for the mores and traditions of ancestors. In Ovid's version, Erisichton's action is a crime against society and the state. The myth remains relevant to modern times. For example, Yury Zhdanov understands the myth as a warning against unlimited consumption of modern society.
