Dynamics and Causes of Changes in the Demographic Composition of the Population of Stavropolis during after the Occupation Period (1943–1944)

(the Branch Stavropol State Pedagogical Institute in Essentuki)

Purpose: The motive of this article is to determine the main demographic indicators (fertility and mortality) of the population of the Stavropol Territory, as well as the factors determining them in the period 1943–1944. The choice of this chronological period is due to the fact, that the statistical data of the regional archives objectively indicate a significant increase in mortality and a decrease
in the population of Stavropol in 1943–1944. Obvious by logic is the growth of the population of those regions of the USSR, which were liberated by Soviet troops from the nazi occupation. However, the population of those areas of the country that were under occupation continued to decrease. Stavropol region is no exception. In this regard, it seems relevant to identify the causes and specifics of this demographic trend in the Stavropol region during the designated period.
Methods: When writing of this study were used methods of historical analysis, synthesis, ideographic method, as well as the fundamental principle of historicism.
Results: Archival materials objectively indicate a difficult demographic situation in the Stavropol Territory during the postoccupation period, namely in 1943–1944. The population of the region experienced a famine and tremendous material deprivations during these years, which was the reason for the decline of the population and high mortality.
Discussion: The article deals with an unexplored historical and demographic problem – change the population of Russia and the Stavropol Territory during the Great Patriotic War. If the population countries in 1939–1940 determined with a sufficiently high degree of accuracy, then its dynamics in 1941–1945 remains until out of sight of scientists. Considered in this article’s scientific problem is not only poorly understood, but is also one of the most relevant issues of national historical demography.
