Confessionary Intention in the Speech of Clergymen in Chekhov's Stories

The article is devoted to the study of the confessionary intention of clergymen in Chekhov's stories. The material for the study was Chekhov's stories "Nightmare", "The Letter" and "The Bishop". Accordingly, the article analyzes the confessionary intention of the characters of Father Yakov, Father Anastasy and Bishop Petr. The study shows that the confessionary intention realizes in the form of repentance, recognition of mistakes, and awareness of mistakes. In repentance, the cause and effect of sinfulness reveal by clergymen, as well as the awareness of sin. Ecclesiastical rank has a negative effect on the clergyman. Confessional intention
realizes in repentance, emotional stress, or ill physical condition. Therefore, emotional-psychological factor or physical condition are determined as a circumstance for remorse. As a result, the clergymen sense guilt, responsibility to others, shame, remorse.
