Types of Speech Persuasion: Argumentation and Persuasion

(Southern Federal University)

The article is devoted to distinguishing between different types of speech persuasion. Speech persuasion can be realized in different ways. As there are two types of speech standard – rhetoric and language each of them admits different number of ways of persuasion. Language standard stands for three ways of affecting an addressee – through a logical route, an emotional route and two
routes combined. Meanwhile, a rhetoric standard does not admit a logical route being used independently. This contradiction results in creating different classification systems. Sticking to a language standard we distinguish between argumentation and persuasion as two individual types. Otherwise, the whole lot of language material is omitted. The speech model of argumentation consists of logos
and ethos and meets a language standard and is realized through a logical route. The model of persuasion consists of logos, ethos and pathos, does not meet a language standard and is realized through two routes combined. The difference between argumentation and persuasion is confirmed with language material in the course of the study.
