The Сonfl ict-Prone Potential of the North Caucasus at the Turn of the 2020s: Factors and Major Trends

(Southern Scientifi c Centre of the RAS)

The article examines the current state of the North Caucasus, analyzes the dynamics of confl ict potential in various segments of its social life; the main trends in the development of the region's economy, social and socio-cultural spheres are recorded.
It is concluded that the beginning of the 21st century was a period of systemic stabilization of the North Caucasus (reduction of the level of ethno-political tension, settlement of interethnic confl icts, restoration of social infrastructure, steady growth of income of the population). In the 2010s, the priority direction in the socio-economic dynamics of the region remained the comprehensive
restoration of the elements of order, basic institutions that increase the stability of the social system. Positive changes at this time are found in all spheres of life of the republics of the North Caucasus, including in the fi eld of management, in some large clusters of the economy (agriculture, tourism, construction). It is suggested that the preservation of a long line of risks associated with the internal problems of the region is not able to prevent the complex development of the region. The positive potential accumulated by the North Caucasus in the 2000s–2010s makes it possible to expand the current agenda of its development with the tasks of innovative development and system modernization.
