The 115th Cabardino-Balkar Cavalry Division during the Battle of the Caucasus in July-August 1942

The Great Patriotic War is the most important milestone in the history of Russia. One of the decisive battles of the Great Patriotic War was the battle for the Caucasus. Nazi leaders sought to conquer the Caucasus because of its reserves of minerals, primarily oil. The study of these events remains an urgent task of historical science.
The article examines the role of the 115th Kabardino-Balkarian Cavalry Division in the battle for the Caucasus. The author uses the scientific principles of historicism and objectivity, the problem-chronological method and source analysis of documents.
The study is based on documents from the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, memoirs of participants in the events, reports of search intelligence and other sources.
The author examines the formation of a cavalry division, analyzes the course of its combat operations, gives examples of
the heroism of soldiers and commanders. Despite heavy losses, the 115th Cavalry Division made a signifi cant contribution to the
defense of the Caucasus. The history of the 115th Kabardino-Balkarian Cavalry Division is a vivid example of the participation of
the national formations of the Red Army in the battle for the Caucasus
