Karachay-Balkar Aristocrats who Died in the Wars of the Russian Empire

(Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov)

The article is devoted to identifying the total number of representatives of the Karachai-Balkarian aristocracy who died in the wars of the Russian Empire. It is noted that since the entry of Balkaria and Karachai into the Russian state, the tsarist government has taken active measures to attract the Karachai-Balkarian aristocracy to military service. As a result of the study, it was possible to reveal that the Karachai-Balkarian aristocrats gave their lives in the ranks of the Russian army in the Caucasian, Russian-Turkish (1877–1878), Russian-Japanese (1904–1905) and World Wars I. At the same time, the largest number of Karachai-Balkarian aristocrats died during the Caucasian War. The article notes a certain evolution that has occurred with the Karachai-Balkarian aristocracy. So, if during the Caucasian War the Karachai-Balkarian aristocrats were involved in military service to a greater extent at the request of the local tsarist administration, then in subsequent wars they participated as volunteers.
This circumstance allows us to assert that with the entry and further integration into the Russian Empire, the Karachai-Balkarians expanded their understanding of the Motherland.
