V.I. Abayev North-Ossetian Institute of Humanitarian and Social Studies – Center for Interdisciplinary Ossetian Studies

(North Ossetian Institute for Humanitarian and Social Research named after V.I. Abaev – branch of Vladikavkaz Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

The article is devoted to the V.I. Abayev North-Ossetian Institute of Humanitarian and Social Studies – one of the oldest scientific institutions in the North Caucasus, the history of which begins with the creation of the Ossetian Historical and Philological
Society in 1919. A review of scientific directions and an analysis of the main results in the field of historical, philological and socio-political research are presented.
An important methodological approach is the use of methods and materials of related scientific disciplines. Interpretation of ethnological, folklore, mythological research objects and phenomena is carried out with the active inclusion of linguistic material,
not only Ossetian, but also related languages. The authors proceed from a conceptual understanding of the closest relationship between language and culture with its rituals, ceremonies, prayer books, and performances. It is the language material that leads to a deep understanding of the meanings inherent in certain actions, forms an objective picture and increases the level of reliability of the study. Correlation with archaeological material is also an important part of an interdisciplinary approach. The study of archaeological sites and the analysis of the results obtained in their course provides an objective study of the ethno-cultural and ethnogenetic processes that took place in the region. Such an expansion of the source base in the course of its analysis allows you to verify the old data and offer new solutions.
The conclusion is made about the main result of the long-term activity of the Institute – the creation of Ossetian studies as a ьcomplex scientific direction, represented by fundamental and applied research in the field of history, ethnology, archeology, linguistics, folkloristics, artistic culture and modern socio-political and cultural processes.
