Agonality is a Determining Factor of the Civilizational Development of the West

The article describes the role of rivalry and competition as key factors in development of the ancient Greek society and polis culture. The balance between the individual and the social that will be maintained by the European civilization is chacterized.
It is sustained between high appreciation of one’s own individuality and uniqueness, on the one hand and understanding the supremacy of law and compliance with it, on the other. The article describes how personal achievements and social development
are linked. The author analyzes some of the concepts that denote phenomena related to agonistic individuals and society, such as honour the hero strives for (time), his courage as an agonistic value (arete) and a non-institutionalized social norm – shame (aidos).
It is argued that the ancient Greek cultural and social development lays the agonistic basis for the European culture and civilization.
