Germans of Turkish Origin in the Political Life of Germany at the Beginning of the 21st Century
At the turn of the 20th – 21st centuries, the Federal Republic of Germany turned into a multinational state in which representatives of various ethnic and religious minorities play an increasingly prominent role. Today, the largest and most influential
among all communities in Germany is Turkish community. At the same time, the majority of Turks living in the Federal Republic maintain close ties with their historical homeland and try not to assimilate, forming close-knit ethno-religious communities in all major German cities. Germans of Turkish origin are represented at all levels of government from local to federal, they are active in the most influential political parties in the country from the Alternative for Germany to the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Union 90 / Greens. The constant strengthening of the representation of German Turks in the Bundestag is particularly noticeable.
If in 1994 there were 2 deputies of Turkish origin in the German parliament, after the elections of 2021 there were already 17 of them. Despite the fact that Turkish deputies try to distance themselves from Erdogan's official Turkey, they undoubtedly support the global interests of the Turkish state. Given the continued growth of the Turkish community in Germany, both due to the high birth rate and the active acceptance of German citizenship of new immigrants, one can predict an even greater increase in the political influence of the Turks in the country. This applies not only to domestic policy, but also to foreign policy, including the strengthening of Turkey's influence on the adoption of political decisions in Europe in its favor. Even being in competing German parties, most Turks remain part of a single ethno-religious community, thinking in common categories and acting in common interests. Being the
largest Muslim community, it is the Turkish one that unites the rest of the country's Islamic groups around itself, creating a powerful group that can in the future have a serious impact on the formation of Germany's domestic and foreign policy.
