From the history of the formation of ethnopolitical science in the North Caucasus: on the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Regional Center for Ethnopolitical Studies of Dagestan

The article discusses the main aspects of the research activities of the Regional Center for Ethnopolitical Studies, which is one of the constituent parts of the Dagestan Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This year the Center celebrated its 30th anniversary. The authors of the article investigate the main research tasks that were solved by scientists during the development of the RCEI of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The scientists of the Center studied the features of the new geopolitical situation of the region, the geopolitical and ethnopolitical aspects of the security of the South of Russia in the new political reality.
They were among the fi rst in our country to provide a scientifi c analysis of the causes and features of the spread of religious extremism and terrorism, the organization of a comprehensive system to counter it and prevent its ideology and practice in the region.
The Center regularly conducted sociological research on topical issues of ethno-political, ethno-confessional development of the region, ethno-political and confessional processes in the North Caucasus in the context of the development of the all-Russian socio-cultural identity, ethno-contact situation in the region. The scientifi c staff of the Regional Center for Ethnopolitical Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducted numerous expert surveys, interviews on the most important issues of the analysis of the ethnopolitical, ethno-confessional, ethno-contact, ethno-linguistic situation in the North Caucasus, the main threats and challenges to national and regional security.
The authors of the article give a brief description of the priority areas of scientific work of the RCEI of the Russian Academy of Sciences at the present stage. Currently, the Center's scientists are investigating two major topics of ethnopolitical and ethnoconfessional development of the North Caucasus region: the North Caucasus in the national security system of the Russian Federation, ethnopolitical and religious aspects of the development of the all-Russian socio-cultural identity.
