The Image of the Romanian Occupier on the Territory of the Rostov Region According to the Memoirs of Eyewitnesses and Archival Documents

(Independent Researcher)

The problems of the historical memory of the population about the events of the Great Patriotic War are very relevant.
The testimonies of people who found themselves in the occupied territories about the policy of the occupation authorities, about the behavior of enemy soldiers, about their violence against the population are relevant. In the South of Russia, soldiers from Italy, Hungary, and Romania fought together with the German army. The historiography of these events, with the exception of the participation of Italians in the war, is clearly insuffi cient. There were political reasons for that. There is practically no memoir literature, especially Hungarian and Romanian soldiers. The article compares documents from the Great Patriotic War about the atrocities and violence of the Romanian occupiers and the memories of local residents about the behavior of Romanian soldiers during the occupation, published decades after the war. Romanian soldiers appear here and there in the form of thieves, looters and rapists. The article
attempts to explain the reasons for the folding of such an image.
the Great Patriotic War, Rostov region, occupation, Romania in World War II
