The “Rebellious Age” of the Ottoman Empire: the Uprising of Muhammad-Giray III in the Crimea in the Light of Turkish Historical Chronicles

(Southern Federal University)

The presented article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the Ottoman chronicle of Abdullah ibn Rizvan «Tevarih-i Desht-i Kipchak». First of all, this concerns the identification of unique information relating to the reign of Khan Mohammed-
Giray III in the Crimea, and in particular the uprising he raised against the Ottoman Empire. The work is based on the analysis of the chronicle of Abdullah ibn Rizvan, as well as specialized scientific works on source studies and the history of the Crimean Khanate.
Being a contemporary of the events described, Abdullah b. Rizvan often shows us his poor awareness of the events taking place in the Crimea, especially after 1610. This can be explained by the fact that his father, Rizvan Pasha, being the governor of Kafa,
was transferred from the Crimea this year. But even without being a direct eyewitness of the events, the author gives us a number of unique information and assessments that allow us not only to better understand the event being studied, but also to penetrate into the system of values generally accepted in a particular social group and playing one of the main roles in the sphere of historical consciousness. These assessments determine, in particular, the individual's attitude to the past and the experience, to the memory of it as a value. With the help of all available historical sources, based on the storyline drawn by Abdullah b. Rizvan, an attempt was made to comprehensively cover the course and events of the uprising in the Crimea, raised by Muhammed-Giray against the Ottoman Empire.
