Demographic Dynamics of the Population of the Don Region During the First World War and the Civil War (1914-1920)

(Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

The article analyzes the demographic dynamics of the population of the Don Region during the First World War and the Civil War. An assessment of the quantitative scale of irretrievable losses of the natives of the Don (in the whole region and its individual districts) in each of the two military campaigns was made. It is established that the main demographic decline of the population occurred during the years of the Civil War, when the loss of the civilian population associated with the material hardships
of wartime and the emigration of a significant part of the opponents of Soviet power outside Russia were superimposed on the many times increased front-line losses. At the same time, natural growth was replaced by a decline and the demographic potential of the Don suffered significant indirect losses. And the significant gender imbalance that arose as a result of the two wars became a factor that significantly complicated the task of post-war recovery growth of the region's population.
