National units perform an important function in the novel-chronicle "Mudreshkin's Son": they introduce a foreign-speaking reader into the world of the nomadic culture of the Kalmyks, unfamiliar to him. The authenticity of the depicted picture is achieved
thanks to the artistic and visual means of the Russian and Kalmyk languages. The categorization of reality in the picture of the world of the steppe people, recreated in the signs of Russian linguoculture, is the result of the writer's artistic bilingualism.
As it is known, an important way of categorizing the world in a text in a non–native language is the use of national units that perform informative (acquaintance with the exotic world of another culture – M.V. Oreshkina), aesthetic (U.M. Bakhtikireeva) functions, as well as a special function of a "conductor of tolerance" (P.O. Tuksaitova).
