The Battle for the Caucasus in English-Speaking Historiography

(Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov)

The paper studies the English-speaking historiography on battle for the Caucasus in 1942–1943. The sample includes researchers from the USA and the British Commonwealth of Nations. In the conditions of the Cold War historians representing former wartime allies of the USSR turned mainly to German documents as a source for studies.
As a result, the battles of the Eastern Front, i.e. Soviet-German front, were oftentimes ignored or underestimated. The author summarizes research positions by thematic areas: the preconditions and causes for the German off ensive in the Caucasus, the Persian corridor of the lend-lease, the defensive and off ensive stages of warfare, and the highland front of the battle for the Caucasus. A variety of explanatory models and facts of historiography revealed not only the research issues, but also the development potential for English-speaking scholars to delve into the history battle for the Caucasus.
