Evoluionary Dynamics of Concept water in the Russian Poetry of the 18th–20th Centuries
The aim of the study is to investigate the poetic concept WATER as regards the evolutionary dynamics of its notional structure over a period of 300 years of Russian secular poetry from the Russian translations of Latin verse by Theophan Prokopovich
(late 17th c.) to the Joseph Brodsky’s poems (late 20th c.).
The verbalized nominations under investigation were selected by means of thorough sampling; their semantic structure and stylistic means and strategies of expression analysed.
The article reveals a sustainable interest and strive to include the said concept in the poetic text, as well as distinctive differences in the its refl ection shown by the poets of various poetic schools and traditions.
The article highlights some specifi c features of metaphorical, metonymical, allegorical, symbolic nominations of water/waters in Russian poetic texts from Theophan Prokopovich to Joseph Brodsky. The latter, turning his poetic text into a sustained metaphor, makes a pessimistic conclusion on man’s inaccessibility of liberty, a unique features inherent in water.
