The Narrative Nature of Forming and Functioning of Complex Precedent Phenomena

(North-Caucasus Federal University)

Purpose: The article studies narratively preconditioned features of forming and functioning of complex precedent phenomena.
The processes of establishment of new precedent phenomena and conditions that contribute to the transformation of individual facts of cultural reality into precedent phenomena are of particular research interest.
Methods: Semiotic, structural-semantic and discursive methods serve the methodological basis of the study. The sample selection of polycode texts related to the main theme of the “Directed by Robert B. Weide”. The selection made it possible to analyze individual elements of the complex precedent phenomena in the dynamics of the development of their connotations and pragmatic potential.
Results: The analysis shows that a complex precedent phenomenon “Directed by Robert B. Weide” was formed within the framework of a narrative that includes several main and subdominant events in the period from 2000 to the present. The studied
phenomenon integrates the elements of several semiotic codes, namely: 1) a specifi c font and compositional design; 2) verbalized textual elements “Directed by Robert B. Weide”, “Robert B. Weide” and “Larry David”, some popular phrases of “Curb your
enthusiasm” sitcom; 3) an auditory precedent element, which was originally the musical accompaniment of the titles (the melody “Frolic”).
Discussion: The media nature of communication activates the involvement of precedent elements and the development of the rhizomatic structure of the complex precedent phenomena. Encoding of complex precedent phenomena occurs at different semiotic levels and in diff erent formats, which allows expanding its semantic content and pragmatic potential.
