A Forgotten Caucasian Student: From the Heritage of P.A. Vostrikov

(Kuban State University)

The article is devoted to the Caucasian heritage of Prokhor Antonovich Vostrikov, who, as the head of the school in Nagorno-Karabakh, studied the history and traditional culture of the Slavic population, Armenians and Azerbaijanis, actively cooperated
with the well-known periodical «Collection of materials for describing the localities and tribes of the Caucasus». The collector's publications are distinguished by deep interest, the flavor of "living antiquity", a great sense of love and respect for the heritage of fellow countrymen and neighbors, attempts to overcome and explain the formation of negative stereotypes, attention to detail, an interdisciplinary approach characteristic of Caucasian studies in general. His book about the village of Naurskaya is still a kind of encyclopedia of the Terek Cossacks, which highlights aspects of population formation, social, ethnic, confessional composition, traditional occupations, rituals of the life cycle, etc. Vostrikov was a pioneer in the study of musical folk culture of Azerbaijanis, collected unique samples of folklore of the Armenian-Azerbaijani borderland. The works of Prokhor Vostrikov provide fertile material about the fruitful communication of cultures, mutual understanding, the formation of a single ethno-cultural space in the Caucasus, allow us to imagine the scale of what has been lost.
