The article tells about the scientific heritage of the famous comparativist of our country A.N. Savchenko, who stood at the origins of the formation of fundamental philological science at Rostov University, who trained a brilliant galaxy of scientists who made a huge contribution to the development of traditional and new linguistic directions.
A.N. Savchenko himself and his disciples were especially fruitful in developing issues of comparative historical linguistics and general grammar. The problem of Balto-Slavic linguistic unity was reflected in the works of A.N. Savchenko and
B.N. Protsenko. A comparative analysis of the vocabulary of Slavic languages in historical retrospective review has become an invaluable experience for B.N. Protsenko in the study of related languages and cultures within the framework
of the now popular ethnolinguistic research. Under the guidance of A.N. Savchenko and in collaboration with him, his most talented student V.V. Ioffe created a textbook on general linguistics. Just like his teacher, V.V. Ioffe studied the
grammatical categories of the Proto-Indo-European language, devoting his PhD thesis to the study of the category of gender in the Proto-Indo-European language. The scientific research of V.I. Degtyarev was concentrated in the field of diachronic linguistics, the scientist formulated the concept of the origin of the categories of collectivity, materiality and abstraction as a result of abstraction of thinking, he determined the patterns of formation and development of the grammatical category of number.
